As the senior population in Henrico County, Virginia, and the greater Richmond area continues to grow, the demand for specialized transportation services, such as wheelchair and stretcher transportation, is increasing. This trend poses significant challenges for healthcare facilities and seniors who do not qualify for Medicaid benefits.
Henrico County has experienced a notable increase in its senior population. As of 2023, individuals aged 65 and over comprised approximately 17.8% of the county's total population. Specifically, the age group distributions were:
This demographic shift reflects a broader trend across Virginia, where, in 2020, one in five residents (22%) was aged 60 or older.
The aging population has led to a heightened need for specialized transportation services such as Devoted Care Services. Many seniors require wheelchair-accessible vehicles or stretcher transportation for medical appointments, social engagements, and daily activities.
Hospitals, emergency rooms, and medical centers face significant operational and financial challenges when they lack adequate wheelchair and stretcher transportation for discharged patients. Without reliable non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT), patients who are medically cleared for discharge may be forced to stay overnight simply because they have no safe way to leave the facility. This not only leads to unnecessary bed occupancy, straining hospital capacity and reducing available space for incoming patients in need of urgent care, but it also creates financial losses, as hospitals typically cannot bill insurance or patients for extended stays that are not medically necessary.
Additionally, prolonged stays increase the risk of hospital-acquired infections and
patient dissatisfaction, further impacting the facility's overall efficiency and
reputation. Ensuring that transportation services are readily available is crucial
for optimizing patient flow, improving financial sustainability, and maintaining
high-quality care.
A significant portion of the senior population in Henrico County and the Richmond area does not qualify for Medicaid benefits, leaving them without coverage for specialized transportation services. According to a 2015 assessment, approximately 4,070 individuals in the region were both elderly and below the poverty level, representing 0.42% of the regional population. Notably, almost 65% of this group resided in the City of Richmond and Henrico County. This indicates that a considerable number of seniors may lack access to affordable transportation options, as they do not meet Medicaid eligibility criteria.
Devoted Care Services continues to collaborate and partner with hospitals, emergency rooms, nursing facilities and supporting agencies throughout Henrico County and the greater Richmond area to increase accessibility and raise awareness for increased support services.
